When it quits raining – that is the scheduled start date for Maple Valley’s coed softball team to hit the field in Ravensdale. The team is now recruiting men and women, age 50 and older, to practice for a softball season that lasts from the first Tuesday in May until August.
“We need a bunch of players in order to field a team this year,” said recruiter Gene Tuffs. To accommodate those who are still employed but can take one day a week off, Tuffs said that “to practice or play” just one game a week is sufficient. “We need players, both one or two days. They are all welcome to join the team.” Beginning as early as the month of February (depending on weather) practice is held each Tuesday and Thursday around 10:00 to 10:30 am at Ravensdale field. The parking lot is located to the left of the new complex. Practice lasts about 1½ to two hours. Games days continue with a similar schedule on Tuesday and Thursdays. Arrival time is 9:30 am and games start at 10:00.
Maple Valley II furnishes the bats and team tee shirts. Players need to furnish gloves, shoes “and enthusiasm”. Qualifications for playing senior coed softball are not complex, “You need to run from one base to another.” Maple Valley II needs a pitcher this year. “Girls who played fast pitch in high school are better players than most guys on the town teams,” it was noted by Tuffs. Those interested in leadership positions like coaching, scorekeeping, and assisting are also encouraged to join in. Maple Valley II is also a very active social organization. They organize potluck lunches, they form get-togethers, and they’re interested in continuing a “social club” environment while wielding a bat, ball and glove.
